Flavoured Butters

We live in a generation where time is money. We do not have time for nonsense, “extra unnecessary” work or idle minds.

However, this change in lifestyle over the years has taken a toll on the home cooking front. We now readily use frozen packs, pre-bottled sauces, and pre-packaged masalas with oil.

The reason why we like restaurant food more than home food is because it is packed with flavour, the extra oils tend to marinate and cook better with the seasonings.

When you cook at home, you don’t have the guts to spill out more oil and butter and the amount of seasonings tends to be more controlled.

One option to achieve a similar taste with less oil is very slow cooking – but who has time for that?

Now the shortcut option I give you requires spending a little time on a free Sunday afternoon to do the following. And this stays good for a good couple of weeks. Some even store them in the freezer – that’s entirely up to you. In fact, the longer you keep the butter, the stronger the flavours will soak into the butter.

The spices are mixed into the butter with some olive oil and kept in an airtight container. When running short of time, simply mix in a dollop or two of this flavoured butter on top of your veggies, potatoes or sandwiches.


I give you options of sweet and savoury – you can use them as you please, in a baked potato, pasta sauce, sandwiches, vegetables, toast, pancakes…

Cinnamon Bun Butter:

¼ cup butter

1 tbsp cinnamon powder

2 tbsp brown sugar


This is the best flavoured butter to spread on toast with a cup of tea! It’s great to use in French toast, cookies and sometimes to butter a cake tin before baking a vanilla cake.

Roasted Garlic + Rosemary Butter

¼ cup butter

2 tsp olive oil

6-7 roasted garlic cloves

2 tbsp dried rosemary


The garlic must be roasted for a sweet taste the blends very well with the rosemary and butter. This butter is the easiest to make when roasting your garlic for Roasted Garlic + Truffle Mac n Cheese.

Lemon + Parsley Butter

¼ cup butter

2 tsp olive oil

¼ cup fresh parsley, finely chopped

Zest of one lemon

1 tsp paprika powder


This is a wonderful scented butter thanks to freshness of the parsley and the citrus notes of the lemon zest. The paprika adds a slight kick.

This butter is best served on baked potato or sweet potato. This is also a great flavour boost to a sandwich.

Strawberry Crush Butter

¼ cup butter

3 tbsp crushed strawberries

1 tbsp chia seeds


This butter is great on toast, croissants, sweet bread, and Danish pastries.

Jalapeno Butter

¼ cup butter

2 tsp olive oil

2 jalapenos, deseeded and finely chopped

2 cloves of garlic, minced

Few sprigs on chopped parsley


This is great to use for garlic bread, chilly cheese toasts and sandwiches. The jalapenos give a great spice kick. If you like spicy food, then do not deseed the jalapenos.

Pesto Butter

¼ cup butter

2 tsp olive oil

3 tbsp walnut + basil pesto


This butter is an ideal accompaniment to a bread-basket.
