Breakfast,Old Recipe Thirst Quenchers,Thirst Quenchers

Smoothies have been my go-to snack for the past few months. Back in college, I never understood what the craze for a smoothie was for – why drink a fruit juice when you can eat them?

I still stand by the fact that you must eat your fruit and not drink it, but on horrible mornings where I am always running late, a smoothie is much easier to handle on the go, fills up your stomach, and the sweet fruits mask the unsavoury tastes of other good-for-you ingredients.

A smoothie is a great way to take in some of your daily nutritional requirements by adding fruits, coconut water or green tea, leafy veggies, a spoon of chia seeds, flax seeds, ginger, amlas, celery, cucumber, beets… the list goes on.

Here I tried something slightly heavier, and with a caffeine kick, which is much needed on hard mornings. The chocolate helps mask the bananas (which I don’t fancy much).

The banana is a good source of potassium, energy and natural sugars, strawberries for the fruit quota, espresso for the caffeine.

Chia seeds: These tiny small black seeds are packed with so much nutrition you will be delightfully surprised! Chia seeds are high in phosphorous, fibre, protein, Omega 3 fatty acids, and many more health enhancing properties – there’s a reason why it’s labelled under superfoods!

Later this week, I shall be posting more easy to make, nutritious and energy boosting smoothies.

Old Recipe Thirst Quenchers,Thirst Quenchers “To me, the smell of fresh-made coffee is one of the greatest inventions.” ~ Hugh Jackman Coffee is the sole contributor for my sanity on most days. I am the stereotypical girl who can’t do without her coffee, and I need coffee a certain way, and I get extremely pissed off if it’s not that exact way. And it MUST be hot! I always choose a hot cup, and rarely ever go for a cold one. Despite now living in a city that is obsessed with cold coffee, I still choose a hot cup, regardless of the sweltering temperatures outside. BUT (there’s always a but!) there was one time in the streets of Bali, two years ago, we came across a cute little café, and we ducked in for a drink. We ordered a cold concoction of coffee, and I a hot cappuccino. While mine came with a beautiful frothed milk design (a bear!), the other came in a WOW state! A tall, long glass, iced coffee, toasted almonds, whipped cream, and an enhanced vanilla taste. Freshly brewed Balinese coffee is awesome, no doubt, but this drink lingered on my taste buds far longer than I would’ve expected. I left my cappuccino untouched, and drank his instead! It’s been two years but the taste is still as vivid. And for a non-iced-coffee drinker, that’s a big deal! Here, I’ve tried to recreate this recipe as closely as possible, and although incredibly simple, I believe the key is the right measurements – after the six attempts! I have tried using real vanilla pods, but in vain. The best is a good quality vanilla essence. I’ve been lucky enough to be gifted a great coffee machine that freshly grinds coffee beans each time you press the button for an espresso. But no fret if you don’t have one – I suggest invest in a French press and get good ground coffee (there are a ton of amazing websites that deliver fresh Indian coffee grounds and beans, and you can even choose the grind size!). If that’s a hassle, then of course instant is the way to go! I like my coffee slightly bitter, so I go for less brown sugar. However, the sugar quantity is up to you – more, less, brown, white, sugarfree. Note that the whipped cream has sugar in it and the vanilla essence is sweet too. If you don’t have whipped cream, beat some powdered sugar into plain cream and put in a dollop or two. The Recipe Serves Serves: 1 | Prep Time: 20 mins | Cool Time: 3 hours Ingredients 1 cup coffee (or the amount you need for your tall glass) 3-4 tsp brown sugar 1 tbsp vanilla essence 1 tbsp almond flakes Few dollops of whipped cream Few ice cubes Instructions Stir the sugar into the hot coffee till it dissolves. Once cooled, place in the fridge to chill, minimum 3-4 hours. Heat a non-stick pan on high flame. Place the almonds on the pan and let toast for a few minutes, until colour changes into light brown. Remove and leave to cool down. In a tall glass, place some ice cubes and pour the coffee in. Stir in the vanilla essence. Put in the whipped cream on top and sprinkle the toasted almonds on top. Serve immediately.

Vietnamese Iced Coffee

Thirst Quenchers Vietnamese coffee has it’s own serious fan following. I’ve met people who rave about it endlessly, and some who trek to certain cafés just for an authentic glass of this. As you’ve read here, I have always had an aversion to condensed milk. I’ve been finding ways to avoid it. The other day I had an intense conversation with a man who had staunch diet beliefs and was quite the coffee snob. The fact that he had so many food restrictions, mostly self-imposed already annoyed me, and then some. He made his case for eggless cakes and Vietnamese coffee, and since I already had leftover condensed milk from the no-churn ice cream, I ignored the cake part and leaned towards the coffee. So, here it is, simple iced coffee, for which I used cold brew coffee, doused some good quality vanilla extract, a lot of ice and a dash of condensed milk. The Recipe Serves 1 Ingredients 1 glass cold brew coffee 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 6-7 iced cubes 1/8 cup condensed milk Instructions Stir the coffee with vanilla extract and pour over a glass with ice cubes. Pour the condensed milk and serve cold.

Pear + Berry Smoothie

Thirst Quenchers This bright red smoothie is as appealing to the eye as it is to the soul. The acai berry powder is an amazing ingredient that I’ve been incorporating into my diet for the past six months. The energy booster and natural antioxidant does wonders and keeps you alive and kicking for the entire day when you start with Acai Berry Bowl. This is an alternate option to start the day with, or even as a mid morning booster to replace that third cup of coffee (I am that bad!). The components can be made in advance and kept in the fridge and brought together just before ready to consume. I buy organic acai berry powder from Sattvic Foods, which also has so many other amazing antioxidants such as my favourites – bee pollen and gluten free rolled oats. The Recipe Serves 1 Ingredients 1/2 cup Green tea, cooled 1/2 cup Pomegranate juice 2 tsp Acai berry powder 1/4 cup Frozen berries 1 Pear Instructions Place all the ingredients together in a smoothie maker or crusher and blitz to make your smoothie.
