Protein Granola Bars

“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” ~ Jim Rohn

As mentioned in my earlier post – my darling baby brother was in the search of something healthy pre-workout. And my commitment is to give him quite a few options, so that he can rotate them every week of the month.

This one is a version of a granola bar with whey protein powder, and makes for a softer texture. It is filled with sesame seeds, unsweetened coconut, dried figs, some honey and extra virgin coconut oil. Again, this recipe has no added sugar, flour, or bad fats.

If you use unflavoured protein powder, you could add in some stronger flavours such as cinnamon, or dried strawberries. I used double rich chocolate flavoured protein powder, so I just added sea salt, as the flavour is overpowering enough.

Despite the abundant availability of coconuts in the country, I found it hard to find a good quality extra virgin coconut oil. And then I came upon this wonderful website of Sattvic Foods. They have products and ingredients that will tickle any health freak’s bone! My shopping cart consisted of about 90% of their products. They are the only ones in India to have bee pollen, organic acai berry and maca powder, the best gluten free rolled oats, and some other amazing stuff!

Check them out here: https://sattvicfoods.in/

NOTE: These health granola bars will not compare to packaged ones – they will be crumbly, may not always take a firm shape or taste as sweet. These are homemade with natural ingredients and without any preservatives and binders.

ANOTER NOTE: This is not a sponsored note! I only write about brands, products and websites that I truly believe in and have tried and tested out.

Cheese on Toast

This is a classic British snack inspired recipe - a mix between Welsh rarebit and cheese on toast - which is an open faced toast with a medley of melted cheese and dash of Worcestershire sauce. i add an egg into the cheese mix to help with setting of it, to add a bit of protein and to get that quiche-y type of topping! to this mix i also add a touch of mustard (English mustard is preferred!) for that little kick.

Roasted Chickpeas

Roasted chickpeas caught my eye on Instagram and the rave around it got me intrigued. Now I know we have the fried chickpeas in chakna snacks, and all that jazz, but roasted? It sounded like a hell of a lot of work. But when faced with a dabbo of boiled chickpeas, and in no mood to make hummus, I thought, let me give this recipe a go. Fairly straightforward, the steps are easy. The seasonings I chose made them even more delicious, and yes, they were crunchy and delicious. But I thought a little more crunch would have been great, so I added a little hint of rice flour to the next batch. Once they are out of the oven, stir with the rest of the seasonings, and in my opinion, eat straight away, warm and full of flavour and love. Don’t bother placing in a jar and storing – it doesn’t last long enough.

Kamini's Avocado Toast

This is something you definitely look forward to waking up to. I know you’ve seen many variations of the avocado toast and each one claims to be the best, but really this one is it for me. Yes, we mash the avocado pulp with garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper. But the toast should be very well done, borderline-ing burnt, with a good layer of butter (garlic butter would be even better). Then of course some feta cheese is optional, since I had some of that in the fridge, but grana Padano works well, so does grated cheddar or blue cheese is the best in my opinion. Then the ultimate ingredient that brings it all together so well – honey with lots of chili flakes. Now I have used Sriracha and various other chili sauces, but the kick from dried chili flake is unbeatable, and paired with honey, this does me too good. Trust me here, and give it a shot. You may start with a just a dash of honey, but with each toast you make, I am sure you will gradually increase the amount of honey. You can also make hot honey and store for all future use!
